Marseille Provence airport : First airport to deploy ‘carrier’ biometrics

First airport to deploy ‘carrier’ biometrics

03.07.2025

We are taking a decisive step forward in our digital transformation by deploying an innovative biometric solution. The aim is to simplify and speed up the passenger journey, while ensuring optimal security and respect for personal data.

Technology that respects personal data

The unique feature of this solution is its ‘on-the-go’ approach. In practical terms, travellers' biometric data (boarding pass, identity documents) is not stored on the airport's servers, but directly on their smartphones in the form of a unique QR code. This approach, which complies with CNIL recommendations, reassures users that their sensitive information is protected.

A simplified and personalised journey

Thanks to this innovation, independent travellers can now complete all stages of their airport journey (check-in, baggage drop-off upon arrival at the airport, security checks, duty free and boarding) quickly and smoothly using their smartphones. This digitalisation also frees up time for airport staff, who can then focus on assisting passengers who need help.

A project with multiple benefits

This is a project that has been several years in the making and is finally coming to fruition today, benefiting travellers, airlines and the airport!

•    Improved operational efficiency: the elimination of manual identity checks speeds up boarding procedures and reduces the risk of errors.

•    Optimised customer experience: staff can offer more personalised support to passengers requiring assistance.

•    Airport appeal: the airport is positioning itself as an innovative player, capable of attracting more airlines and travellers.

•    Optimised operations: real-time monitoring of passenger flows enables more efficient resource management and greater responsiveness in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

•    Commercial revenue growth: by reducing waiting times, passengers have more time to enjoy the airport's services and shops.

How does it work?

Travellers must first check in via the airport's mobile app or a terminal kiosk. They then receive a unique biometric QR code containing their personal information (boarding pass, digital proof of identity, biometric template). This QR code allows them to pass through all airport checkpoints quickly and securely.

In short, Marseille Provence Airport is at the forefront of innovation in airport biometrics, offering a solution that combines efficiency, security and respect for personal data.
